Red Walnut Longcase Clock by Gabriel Smith of Barthomley Circa 1720 .

This clock has to have been one of the most interesting clocks we have come across .
Made by Gabriel Smith around 1720 and having links with the Twemlow family of Hatherton the clock has so many fascinating features and has an adventurious life .
Firstly the case is a beautiful striking colour it is made from an unusual timber  known as Red Walnut which resembles Mahogany red walnut is a heartwood timber which stems from the centre of the Walnut tree although most walnut timber was brought in from France it also grew in England having been introduced into the country by the Romans Mahogany didnt appear in Britain till the mid 1720's as a timber of choice for carpenters/joiners .

It stands at a majestic height of 7 ft 1 inch with a width of 20 inchs and depth of 10 inchs its caddy top is above a blind fretwork frieze .
In the centre of the frieze is the family crest a parrot perched on an Oak stump .
The dial is a beautiful dial with silvered chapter ring , seconds ring and date ring the corner spandrals have cherub heads and scrolling foliage and figures riding hawks are above the reamed winding holes .
Gabriel Smith's name is proudly engravered on the dial with the town of Batthomley where he was born in 1656 he stayed in the town until 1722 when he moved to Nantwich until 1743 .

Unusually it has the coat of arms and crest of two prmonant Cheshire familys engraved on the back of the works the first being the Twemlow family od Hatherton and the the Venables family of Leftwich we normally only place 2 photographs of clocks onto our website but we thought it best to show the reverse of the works to .
